Circa 1880, wood Burseraceae, torchwood, 59 cm. A classic Hemba ancestor figure with hands resting about the umbilicus, eyes half-open. These figures are imbued with the nobility of the ancestors, augmenting the family lineage. These figures would have been shown during important ceremonies to enforce the family's position. As a spirit container, the figure would facilitate the connection between the world of the dead and the living.
