Born in Innsbruck, Austria in 1959 and presented with the Award of the City of Vienna for Visual Art, Peter Kogler is one of the most successful contemporary artists. He became well-known with his space-dominating wallpaper installations and illusionistic spatial labyrinths, his walkable video projections, and computer animations. Kogler’s Sign Language of Ants are distinctive pictorial codes and instantly associated with him. Kogler discovered ants as artistic subject of study by accident when he was a young artist sitting in friend’s garden, filming an ant that was crawling across a newspaper. This was the beginning of his fascination with these small organisms, right in the middle of an alphabetical jumble.
