Lot No. 59

Amritsar Triclinium,

Amritsar Triclinium, - Collection Adil Besim

Northwest India, c. 465 x 363 cm, second half of the 19th century. In 16th-century India Persian became the language of administration and culture, and for this reason it is not surprising that the art of weaving of Persian courtly manufactories also spread to India. The formal structure of the present carpet is very unusual, the five cartouches look like five carpets joined together. This piece found use as a dining carpet in the courtly ceremonial, and its subdivisions indicate a seating arrangement and the position of food and beverages. Carpets such as this one are very rare and are known as “audience rugs” or “triclinia” (singular “triclinium”). Good overall condition, traces of usage to the upper right blue.

Exhibition:
the carpet was put on display on the occasion of the exhibition: “Das Indien der Maharadschas” at Schallaburg Castle, 23 March - 10 November 2013.
