War Rug,
Northeast Persia (Iran)/Afghanistan, c. 237 x 208 cm, about 1990, in the decade of Soviet occupation of Afghanistan between 1979 and 1989, carpet manufacturers developed a new type of carpet known as “war rugs”, which were designed to express the population’s protest, mostly executed in small rug size, this piece is a rare large specimen with naive depictions of urban scenes in which bellicose land vehicles and aircraft threaten peace, the inner blue border with bird motifs is flanked by weapons, the camel caravan on the outside is also faced with weapons and aeroplanes, only slight signs of wear, in good condition, translation of the Afghan inscriptions not available.
