Lot No. 263

Edmund Adler *

(Vienna 1876-1965 Mannersdorf)
The Kid, signed Edmund Adler, oil on canvas, 55 x 67.5 cm, framed, (Rei)

“The Kid” by Edmund Adler depicts not the many children of Mannersdorf, as was his custom, but instead an unknown girl together with the artist’s daughter Rosa and his son Gilbert. The scene is set in a barn where Rosa and Gilbert are feeding a kid goat from a cup and the young girl is feeding greens to a family of rabbits. Edmund Adler executed many pencil studies of rabbits and kids which he then used in different combinations for his oil paintings. (Compare: Barbara Kremser, Edmund Adler, 1876- 1965, Leben und Werk, Mannersdorf 2000, no. 180, 264). A pencil study of Rosa Adler is also owned by the Stadtgemeinde Mannersdorf (No. 370). The present work is a combination of the two oil paintings “In the Rabbit Hutch” (Dorotheum Auction, 13.10.1982, lot. 381) for the left-hand side, and “The Little Darlings Being Fed” (Dorotheum Auction, 6.12.1989, lot. 522) for the right-hand side. The work will be included in the Edmund Adler Archive in Vienna by Barbara Hagerty (formerly Kremser).
