Matthäus Terwesten came from a well-known family of artists. After several years in Rome and Berlin, he settled in The Hague in 1699. The following year he was appointed regent of the Hague drawing academy. Terwesten was a portraitist and history painter and one of the most prominent exponents of 18th-century Dutch Neoclassicism.
