A prototype of a Flat Nouveau Chair, Ronen Kadushin,
2012, laser-cut and manually bent 6-mm-thick aluminium sheet, 100 x 125 cm, chair: height 85 cm, width 64 cm, depth 50 cm, inscribed: Flat Nouveau Chair Ronen Kadushin 2012. (DR) Produced in Vienna in September 2012 during the Vienna Design Week. This chair draws its inspiration from Art Nouveau, a movement that has strong origins and a strong presence in Vienna. It is a piece that reflects upon more than a century of cultural evolution, from classic motifs, typeface, and 1960s psychedelic art, bringing about an Art Nouveau revival and commercial use of the style. The chair is a generous and humoristic sculptural expression making reference to Art Nouveau. The Flat Nouveau Chair features a unique structural configuration and hinge mechanism that were developed by Ronen Kadushin. It is cut from a single sheet and bent to shape by hand with no need for machines. It is also an Open Design, meaning anyone can download the design files from the designer’s site and self-produce it or change it, much like in Open Source Software.
