A “PODIUM” couch table,

A “PODIUM” couch table, - Design

designed by Nicolas Le Moigne, Switzerland, in 2011 for Edition Helmrinderknecht, manufactured by Entique Illanez, Switzerland, gloss-finished lathe-turned oak tabletop, white lacquered wooden pedestal (foot), height 40 cm, 100 x 100 cm. (DR) From the limited edition of 8 + 2 AP. Exhibited in: Design Miami Basel 2011. The “PODIUM” collection consists of three vases (ceramic), a light (glass), a bowl (stone), a shelving unit (wood), a side table (copper), and a couch table (wood). It is based on observations of the customary presentation modes in a gallery and museum context. Objects are mostly displayed on pedestals whose plain forms and carefully chosen dimensions emphasize the object’s impact. This iconic form of presentation inspired Le Moigne to create a basic shape that characterizes all of the objects in the “PODIUM” collection: the object and the base are always connected with each other so that they form a unity. The “PODIUM” collection plays with the pedestal as a means of enhancement (if with a certain irony). None of the objects in the “PODIUM” collection could exist without its “pedestal”, for only the base makes the object complete both aesthetically and functionally. This connection between the object and its carrier irritates our visual habits and encourages us to take a second, closer look. The result is a shift in perception, with the object’s form and function being reviewed. Various turning techniques such as lathe turning, metal spinning, stone cutting, glass blowing, and pottery making have been employed to manufacture the individual objects. These work processes define the respective final forms of the objects resting on their pedestals.
