A high chair (“Bureau Chair”), Gebrüder Thonet,


c. 1890, beech bentwood, the seat and backrest covered with dark brown stained and moulded veneer, with stamped Thonet brand and factory label, height 115.5 cm, width 34.5 cm, depth 59 cm, height of seat 74 cm. (DR) A special model based on serial model No. 4257, featuring a frame reinforced with stretcher “22” (four semicircular arches) and quadrant braces (additional connections between seat frame and seat ring). The basic model featuring a 45-cm-high seat is listed in the catalogues as Model No. 57 from 1885 on. It is the first model for which plywood was used – a material Franz Thonet discovered for his company at the St. Louis Universal Exposition in 1873. Initially, perforated or smooth finishes were used, which from c. 1890 on were replaced by moulded veneers.
