Mathias Weischer *
(born Elte in 1973) “Bad”, on reverse titled, signed, dated M. Weischer 2002 and with measurements, oil on canvas, 103 x 82.5 cm, on stretcher, (PS)
Provenance:
Galerie Frank Schlag, Essen
Private Collection Germany
Exhibited:
Neues Museum Weserburg, Bremen, 2005, 2006, Aktuelle Malerei, Skulptur und Fotographie aus Dresden & Leipzig.
Matthias Weischer is a central figure of the New Leipzig School. Weischer’s works tread the thin line between abstract and figurative painting. His paintings executed up to 2007 predominantly depict deserted interiors, presented in a stage-like manner in unusual, multiple perspectives, made alien through the introduction of abstract elements. In terms of style, Weischer uses room furnishings, as in the kiwi-green shower tray, the overflow plug, the lamp and raspberry-coloured bathmat in this work, to hint at the 1950s and 60s. In accordance with the style of the New Leipzig School, Matthias Weischer pays particular attention to detail, alluding to the minimally visible cosmos by overemphasising individual elements such as the mirrored shelf, obscured from view.
