The Polish artist Roman Opalka is one of the most rigorous exponents of “scriptural painting” which he continually enriched with his own, particularly extreme, version from 1965 onwards. The sequence of works 1965/1 - ? begins with 1 and is regarded as Opalka’s lifework, the end of the works defined as infinity. The artist numbered each canvas and sheet of paper, identical in format, from 1 onwards in ascending order. Each new canvas, which the artist called a “detail”, is identified by a number made up from the first number of the line in the top left-hand corner, and ending with the last number of the line in the bottom-right. The final number Roman Opalka painted was 5607249.
