Lamberto Vitali, Morandi, Catalogo generale dei dipinti, Electa, Milan, 1977, vol. I, no. 321 with ill. Exhibition: Giorgio Morandi, Museo d’Arte di Lugano, 10 March - 1 July 2012, exh. cat. with ill. page 89
The simple sculptural forms of the houses, which, together with the framing green of the landscape and the blue-grey of the sky, is the subject of this composition, convey great sensuality in their delicate colouration.
“It is not only houses that he treats like boxes, subjugating them to the conditions of still lifes. He translates the complex polymorphous nature of the organic (trees, plants, bushes), the ‘diversité’ of hills, valleys, paths, clouds – that is, the conventional repertoire of the landscape – into a spatial arrangement. The point of this is not just to reduce the visual aspect of nature to that of painting, but simultaneously to enrich it.” (E.- G. Güse/ F. A. Morat (eds), Giorgio Morandi, Munich 2008)
