Günther Uecker *
(born Wendorf 1930) "Graphein", book with 12 relief prints, not bound, each signed, dated Uecker 02, no. 65 of 120 numbered copies, introduction by Christoph Brockhaus, 70 x 50 cm, Pub. Dorothea van der Koelen and Edouard Weiss, in cardboard cover with relief print, in perspex box, (12), (EH)
The animation of creation. As long as speech was still independent of writing, the auditory dominated the visual and laws and commands still possessed acoustic authority. With the discovery of writing, which in many high cultures was regarded as a gift of the gods or of God, and which in this book is treated as „animation of creation“, we rediscover today our lost imagined early times, as well as the foreign in the familiar and the proximate in the foreign. We regard ourselves in the mirror of (sacred) writings and in the “movement of light” in the relief prints, black on white and white on white. (...) In an exchange with the typography, Günther Uecker’s nail compositions, spiral, micro- and macrocosmic, wavy and animated, finally calmly dying away, have the effect of a sigh of relief. We "match together", in his words, "the inequalities,... which are so bound together through internally experiential relationships that they form a whole." Christoph Brockhaus
