Jan Thomas van Yperen was one of the last pupils of Peter Paul Rubens. In 1639/40, he is documented to as a master in the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp. In 1654, the artist moved to Mainz and subsequently, via Frankfurt am Main, to Vienna. His compositions are dependent on Rubens and Theodor van Thulden. The present painting is comparable to a Lamentation of Christ from 1661 (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna) and to a Crucifixion dated to 1663, which was sold at Christie’s South Kensington, London, on 4 July 1996 as lot 21. This painting seems to have been completed between 1661 and 1663.
