(Palmanova 1762–1844 Milan)
Landscape with soldiers on horseback and an arched bridge,
tempera on paper mounted on card, 47 x 64 cm, framed
Giuseppe Bernardino Bison was the pupil of Romani and Cedini at the Academy in Venice, although he was primarily influenced by Gian Domenico Tiepolo and Francesco Guardi. He would later turn to the style of Marco Ricci, Giuseppe Zais and Antonio Diziani. He is truly an artist of the transitional period at the turn of the century. His sense of irony dominates his work, which ever more distances him from the 18th century and the classicising academic tradition. After a phase of decorative painting and original eclecticism, he started producing fantastical vedute in tempera, which are characterised by a fluid, luminous, and spontaneous style of painting without pentimenti, as can be seen in our painting.
