Provenance:
formerly in the collection of the Canadian railway magnate, George Stephen, 1st Baron Mount Stephen (1829-1921), Hatfield;
P. Jackson Higgs Gallery, New York (1927);
collection of Loew, Beverly Hills, CA (1950);
Exhibited:
Van Dyck Exhibition, Institute of Art, Detroit, April 1929, no. 31 (as Van Dyck).
This portrait of an unknown gentleman was deemed an authentic work by van Dyck in a letter to the previous owner from Wilhelm Valentiner.
Prof Manfred Schreiner, Vienna, has undertaken an examination of the picture (pigment analysis). It confirms the date of execution as being in the 1st half of the 17th century.
