(The Hague? 1608/09–1662/66 Bergen op Zoom)
Dune landscape with grazing cattle,
signed and dated lower left: J P Schoeff 1649,
oil on panel, 50 x 70 cm, framed
Johannes Schoeff belonged to the close circle of landscape painters around Jan van Goyen, whose friend and neighbour he was. He painted dune and river landscapes, which were based on the work of van Goyen and Salomon van Ruysdael. Hans-Ulrich Beck writes about the artist, “In terms of style, Schoeff is more similar to van Goyen than Salomon van Ruysdael; only in the case of river landscapes with receding, bushy banks does one consider him to be closer to the style of Sal. van Ruysdael. However near he appears to approach the work of both artists in many of his paintings, there are other wide landscapes, conceived generously with rising hills, bedecked with rows of bushes and small figural groups. These works are his own creation and have no precedents...” (in: H.-U. Beck, Künstler um Jan van Goyen, Doornspijk 1991, p. 390).
