Johann Kupezky
(Bösing 1667–1740 Nuremberg)
Portrait of a man with a fur cap,
oil on canvas, 71 x 57 cm, framed
Provenance:
Sotheby’s London, 6.7.1988, lot 205;
Dorotheum auction, Vienna, 18.3.1992, lot 181;
German private collection.
This painting is accompanied by a written statement from Dr Eduard Safarik (1992), in which he confirms the picture, “questo stupendo ritratto”, as an authentic work by Kupezky. Dr Safarik dates it to shortly after 1707, that is, to the early period of this artist from Bohemia. He compares it with the ‘Homage to Rákóczi’ by Kupezky, which was executed at around the same time and is now in the Szépmüvészeti Museum in Budapest. The skilfully painted portrait of an unknown gentleman is an excellent example of the artist’s great talent. Kupezky was one of the most important portraitist of his time, enjoying great success with his sensitive portraits.
