Attributed to Michiel Coxcie

Attributed to Michiel Coxcie - Old Master Paintings

(Mecheln 1499–1592)
Pietà with two angels carrying torches,
oil on panel, 161.5 x 170.5 cm, in a carved and gilded predella frame,

We are grateful to Dr Jan de Maere, Brussels, who has suggested an attribution to Michiel Coxcie for this painting.

The picture exhibits the strong influence of Florentine Mannerism, which took hold in Antwerp towards the late 16th century. This painting is probably a reredos belonging to an altarpiece for a chapel, the benefactor of which will have influenced the unusual choice of theme. The iconography combines the canonically traditional form of the pieta with the topos of the mercy seat. Stylistically, the altarpiece makes reference to a small Annunciation by Coxcie, held at the Hermitage, St. Petersburg. Coxcie, who spent much time in Italy, does exhibit Italian Mannerist tendencies in his late work, and, for this reason, this may well be one of his later paintings.
An alternative attribution for this painting to the workshop of Frans Francken II has been suggested elsewhere.
