Attributed to Salvator Rosa

Attributed to Salvator Rosa - Old Master Paintings

(Arenella 1615–1673 Rome)
The philosopher, Democritus,
oil on canvas, 122 x 91 cm, framed

We are grateful to Prof Riccardo Lattuada, who has suggested an attribution to Salvator Rosa having seen a photograph of this painting. The painting is comparable with a St. Peter of similar dimensions by Salvator Rosa (oil on canvas, 123 x 96 cm, Hartford, Trinity College) to which a pendant exists (Athens, Georgia, Kress Study Collection). It can be assumed that there is also a pendant to this picture of Democritus, which one might traditionally expect to depict Heraclitus weeping. Democritus is seen as the father of modern science and is often shown laughing. Rosa demonstrates the strong influence on his work of Tenebrism in this painting. One can clearly see the expressive nature of his brushstroke and the dark background typical of his work.
