Augustin Terwesten the Elder
(The Hague 1649–1711 Berlin)

Terwesten spent two years of his apprenticeship in the studio of the history painter, Nicolaes Wieling, who was appointed court painter to the Prince Electors of Brandenburg in Berlin in 1667. His next master was Willem Doudijns, a specialist in ceiling painting and large history painting. Terwesten spent time in Rome from 1672, where he became a member of the Bentvleughels. In 1678 he returned to The Hague via Venice, France and England. During the 1680s Terwesten executed numerous wall and ceiling paintings in The Hague and other Dutch cities. In 1682 he was one of the founding members of the Academy in The Hague. Terwesten lived in Berlin from 1690, being appointed court painter to the Prince Electors in 1692. In his later years, Terwesten became a teacher at the Berlin Academy, which he also directed.
