Eduard Charlemont was first taught by his father, the miniature painter Matthias Charlemont. His talent was recognised very early and quickly encouraged. He was already teaching drawing in a girls’ school at the age of 15 before he entered the Vienna Academy. He was significantly influenced by his teacher, Hans Makart, in his use of colouring and form. Charlemont spent several decades in Paris before he finally returned to Vienna. One of his most well-known works depicts the ceiling paintings in the foyer of the Burgtheater in Vienna.
