Jan Hendrik van de Laar initially studied in Antwerp before political unrest forced him to move to The Hague. He subsequently lived and worked almost exclusively in Rotterdam. Van de Laar was appointed director of the newly founded Academy in Rotterdam in 1850. His works are predominantly genre paintings and take as their motifs Dutch history or scenes from the lives of famous artists.
