(Hamburg 1849–1936) “Gartenfest” (Garden Party), signed and dated Ferd. Brütt Cbg. 1900, also inscribed on the reverse, oil on canvas, 61.5 x 80 cm, restored, framed, (Rei)
Ferdinand Brütt
completed his education at the art school in Weimar where he attended the painting class taught by historical painter Ferdinand Pauwels. His studies were made possible thanks to bursaries organised by Jessen, director of the Hamburg Kunsthalle. His high profile in a variety of regions brought him commissions amongst the best social circles. His sensitive use of light and shadow lent his city and landscape scenes an atmospheric effect. The work here shows a park landscape in Wilhelmsthal, a motif used frequently by Brütt in his oeuvre. (Cf. e.g. “The Blind Violin Player”, 1882, or “Park in Wilhelmsthal with a Jesuit”, c. 1883) (Cf. Ferdinand Brütt, Museum Giersch, Frankfurt a. M. 2007)
