Princess Marie was the daughter of Grand Duke Carl Friedrich von Sachsen-Weimar and his wife Maria Pavlovna, Grand Duchess of Russia. She married Prince Carl of Prussia, a son of King Friedrich Wilhelm III and Queen Luise in 1827 in Charlottenburg near Berlin. Her younger sister Augusta married Prince Carl’s older brother who would later become Kaiser Wilhelm I. The princely couple’s favourite residence was Schloss Glienicke near Potsdam.
