The grotto of Vilenica in the Karst, north of Triest is the oldest show cave of Europe. The coloured surface of the stone, a 30m high stalactite and the „dancing floor“ are major attractions oft he cave. Emperor Francis I visited it in 1816. Until the mid 19th century and prior to the Adelberg grotto the cave at Vilenica was a popular destination for tourists from Triest and Rijeka.
