relief, German, 17th century, carved wood, polychrome painted and gilt, 49.5 x 34.5 cm, age-related damage, worm holes.
The scene depicts Saint Anthony opposing the usurer’s burial in consecrated ground arguing that the deceased man’s soul is already in Hell. Anthony refers to the Gospel of Saint Luke: “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Indeed, when the usurer’s corpse is examined, no heart is to be found there. For the usurer’s heart lies in his chest of money.
