Tapestry fragment,
Southern Netherlands, c. 259 x 206 cm, end of the 15th/beginning of the 16th century, the present piece is one of the oldest tapestries in the collection; in the coarse execution typical of the period, with monumental drawing, the tapestry is in good overall condition with only minor repairs, all the sides trimmed with restored border, sewn on linen; the image features Heracles (Lat. Hercules) carrying out his second labour and slaying the Lernaean Hydra, a serpentine water monster. According to Greek mythology, Hercules succeeds in cutting off the Hydra’s one mortal head.
