Attributed to Ulrich Mair
(active in Kempten c. 1483)
altarpiece painted on both sides, front side: a pope writing, reverse: Saint Andrew and Saint Peter, oil on panel, punched gold ground, 89.5 x 72 cm, framed
Provenance:
Private Collection, Vienna;
Dorotheum Vienna, 17 November 1981, lot 104
Literature:
H. Rott, Quellen und Forschungen zur südwestdeutschen und schweizerischen Kunstgeschichte im XV. und XVI. Jahrhundert, vol. 2, Alt-Schwaben und die Reichsstädte, Stuttgart 1934, p. 139
The Kempten painter Ulrich Mair only gained recognition due to the discovery of his signature on an altar wing, painted on both sides, in Wernigerode Castle (in Saxony-Anhalt), dated 1473. The depiction of the saint sitting at a writing desk allows one to conclude that this is probably an image of one of the four Fathers of the Church. The tiara indicates that this is most likely Gregory the Great, as the only pontiff of the four. In this context, the two apostles depicted on the reverse, Andrew and Peter, represent the Eastern and Western Church.
