From 1938 to 1947, Fritz Riedl studied painting at the Academy of Fine Art in Vienna under Albert Paris Gütersloh. In 1948 he began weaving tapestry and set up a studio and home with Johanna Schidlo. In the same year he mounted an exhibition of tapestries based on his own designs and those of artist friends of his from Art-Club circles. In 1954 he took part in the Venice Biennale. In 1959 he showed at Documenta II in Kassel and in 1963 at the Biennale in Sao Paulo, where he was awarded the prize for applied art for 1963. In 1967 he was awarded the City of Vienna Prize for applied art. In 1968 he emigrated to Mexico and founded the ‘Gobelinos Mexicanos’ factory in Guadalajara. In 1976 he returned to Austria, where he taught textile design at the Hochschule für künstlerische und industrielle Gestaltung in Linz until 1991...
