Lot No. 457

Gottfried Goebel

(Vienna 1906-1975 Paris) „No.318“, Tubes (Relief), on the reverse titled, signed and dated Goebel 1962, cardboard (three-dimensional) sewn onto jute, wood, painted, 117 x 138 cm, (K)

Exhibited, and reproduced in the catalogue: Künstlergruppe „Der Kreis“, Künstlerhaus Vienna, 13 October - 15 December 1963, no. 26. Goebel Gottfried, studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts with Rudolf Jettmar, 1930, showed his works at exhibitions of the Hagenbund group in Vienna. 1934 lived and shared a studio with his partner Greta Freist. The studio, where author Heimito von Doderer also periodically lived and worked, became a literary venue where figures such as Elias Canetti, Otto Basil, Hermann Broch and Albert Paris Gütersloh would meet. In 1936 Goebel and Freist moved to Paris and Goebel exhibited there for the first time in 1937 at the Salon d‘Automne. Goebel was interned by the French authorities at the beginning of World War II. His first abstract works were painted in 1948/49 (series Fond B anc). From 1952 onwards, these gave way to geometric abstraction (Losanges) in which, from 1954, elements of Tachism can be identified. In 1950 Goebel and Freist founded the French division of the International Art Club in Paris. From 1960 Goebel experimented with material pictures and created the series Peint. en Relief (from 1957), and Tubes (from 1960).
