Lot No. 80

A rare chair,

designed by Harry Rosenthal, Berlin, 1928, dark brown stained solid oak and oak veneer, height 79.5 cm, width 44.5 cm, depth 63 cm, height of seat 45 cm. (DR)

Hardly any furniture objects by the architect Harry Rosenthal (1892 Posen–1966 London) have survived. There also existed a garden furniture programme (featuring slatted seats and backrests) that was based on this chair and marketed by Bruno Koffer, Berlin-Halensee, as from 1932. The chair was also used with flat seat cushions tied to its frame. One of these chairs furnished with such flat seat cushions was used in the David apartment in Berlin, which was designed by Rosenthal and is now on display in the Kunstindustrimuseet in Oslo. Provenance: from a private home in Berlin-Willmersdorf. According to the former owner, the chairs – altogether four – were purchased in 1928.
