Lot No. 308

Frederik de Moucheron

(Emden 1634-Amsterdam 1686) A shepherd making music in an Arcadian landscape before ruins of a sanctuary, in the background a waterfall, signed and dated lower right: Moucheron F., oil on canvas, 68 x 61 cm, framed,

The son of a family originally from Normandy, he moved to Amsterdam where he trained in the workshop of Jan Asselijn. Thereafter he settled in Moucheron in France and is documented in Paris and Lyon. After a short visit to Antwerp he returned to Amsterdam in 1658. As is shown in this painting, his work was strongly influenced by the second generation of Dutch Italianising painters, especially his teacher, Asselijn and Jan Both. His lighting and foliage draws on Both's. Moucheron enjoyed peopling his landscapes, as in this case, with ancient architecture and sculpture. His figural groups are rarely by the artist himself. It is obvious that another hand must have painted the resting shepherd. Candidates for this are Dirck Helmbreker, Johannes Lingelbach or Adriaen van de Velde.
