Johannes Nicolaus Treu was the offspring of the famous painter family, Treu of Bamberg. His grandfather was the court Jew, Wolf Nathan. His father converted to the Catholic faith and took the name, Joseph Marquard Treu. As the pupil of his father, he Johannes Nicolaus specialised in portraiture. He also produced a few of his unmistakeable lifelike genre scenes, such as this painting and its pendant. Under Adam Friedrich von Seinsheim he went to Würzburg, where he was appointed royal valet, court painter and gallery inspector. He was responsible among other things for the high altarpiece in the Augustinerkirche in Würzburg and for the Nikolausaltar in the pilgrimage church, 'Käppele'. Many of his works are to be found in the Historisches Museum, in the Neuer Residenz at Bamberg and in the Mainfränkisches Museum in Würzburg.
