It has not yet proved possible to identify the artist who produced this image of St. Catherine of Alexandria. However, it is probable that the unknown painter was active in Tuscany, although highly likely not in one of the three main centres of art production - Florence, Siena and Pisa, even though he was obviously aware of the artistic developments in those large cities, which leads us to the works of the Master of Popiglio or the painter of the Madonna dell’Umiltà in the Kister Collection, Kreuzlincalled The figure of what is supposed to be a saint with its slim form, refined gold-hemmed drapery and fine physiognomy appear to accord with late Gothic aesthetic ideals. The complexion and details of the face, such as the finely drawn slit-shaped eyes and pale flesh tones are typical of the characteristics of artists working in Lucca and the region of Pistoia. It appears that these characteristics originated in the tradition of primitive painters from Pistoia, the so-called Master of 1310. The originality of the anonymous artist of the work offered here is further underlined in the positioning of the saint between two borders. The figure almost appears to be seated on a throne, the throne of her martyrdom, which is relatively unusual iconographically for this period. Thanks to this formal solution, the artist succeeds in indicating the space which is inhabited by the figure. This lovely painting belongs to a small group of eclectic painting of extraordinary quality which was produced outside the main centres of Tuscan art production. We are grateful to Prof. Filippo Todini for the information that the artist of the work offered is either the Master of Popiglio or the painter of the Madonna dell’Umiltà in the Kister Collection, Kreuzlincalled. L’autore dell’opera qui presentata, raffigurante la figura di S. Caterina d’Alessandria, non è stato ancora identificato. Si ritiene, tuttavia, che il pittore sia stato attivo in Toscana, in uno dei grandi centri d’arte, in quanto dimostra di rispondere agli importanti sviluppi artistici in queste grandi città. Essa rimanda alle opere del Maestro di Popiglio o dell’autore della Madonna dell’Umiltà della collezione Kisters a Kreuzlingen L’aggraziata figura della santa, con la vita stretta, e il raffinato panneggio finemente orlato d’oro, insieme con la fisionomia un pò fragile della santa, sembrano rispondere agli ideali estetici di un Gotico già avanzato. Tuttavia, le caratteristiche ed i particolari del viso come gli occhi finemente disegnati a fessura, ed il tono piuttosto pallido dell’incarnato, sembrano corrispondere a certe tipologie che si sono sviluppate tra gli artisti operanti a Lucca e nella regione di Pistoia. Sembra che questa particolare tipologia nasca da una tradizione avviata dai pittori primitivi pistoiesi, come il cosiddetto Maestro del 1310. L’originalità di quest’anonimo pittore è ulteriormente rafforzata dal posizionamento della santa tra le due ruote, la figura sembra quasi collocata su di un trono, il trono del suo martirio, iconografia piuttosto insolita per il periodo. Grazie a questa soluzione formale, l’artista riesce così sottilmente a definire lo spazio in cui si trova la figura. Questo bel dipinto, appartiene quindi, ad un gruppo piuttosto ristretto di pittura eclettica di qualità eccellente,della produzione artistica toscana.
