Provenance: 566th Auction Dorotheum, Vienna, 1st December 1964, Lot 1. At the auction of 1st December 1964 at the Dorotheum in Vienna, this painting was offered together with an extract from the letter of authentication issued by Prof. Dr. Bruno Grimschitz, dated 16th March 1964, as follows: „The painting overleaf (oil on canvas, 84 x 67 cm), depicting the interior of the Santa Maria gloriosa dei Frari church in Venice, is, in my opinion, a characteristic original by the painter Rudolf von Alt (Vienna 1812-1905 Vienna). The painting, distinguished by its particularly impressive treatment of light, bears the artist’s name and the date in his own hand: R. Alt 1845, Vienna.“ (The letter of authentication cited is no longer available.)
