Compaire Literature: Friedrich von Boetticher, Malerwerke des 19. Jahrhunderts, Vol. II,1, p. 908f. Joseph Hendrik Hubert Lies: The artist studied at the Academy in Antwerp and his work very quickly brought him success. Following a lung disease he travelled south, through Switzerland, France and Italy, where he was evidently influenced by the Italian masters. On returning to Antwerp he became a teacher at the Academy and a member of the Vereeniging van Antwerp association. He won the Golden Medal of Brussels in 1851 and 1853 and his works can be found today in museums in Antwerp, Brussels, Vervier, Ghent and Tornai.
