Rare Biedermeier chandelier


Snake-shaped chandelier, probably designed and produced by J. Danhauser in Vienna circa 1820/25, later fitted with twelve electric lights, made in wood and gesso, the snake-shaped wooden ring partly covered in gold leaf, the light branches, also in the form of snakes, entwine the ring, the curled ends on the inside of the ring, from the centre another snake emerges, suspended on chains with rosette, height ca. 105 cm, diameter ca. 85 cm, some ageing, without guarantee for electrical fitting. (DOC) The sophisticated execution of this chandelier is a technical masterpiece, evidence of creativity and consummate skill of J. Danhauser who during the Empire and Biedermeier periods often used the symbol of the snake to represent eternity.
