Lot No. 272 #

Franciscus Carré

(Antwerp 1630–1689 Leeuwarden) A merry group in front of a tavern, signed lower left: F. Carre, oil on panel, 45 x 64 cm, framed

In 1660 Franciscus Carré entered the Guild in The Hague and from 1656 onwards belonged, as a founder member, to the Pictura Brotherhood, which gives one some appreciation of his standing in the community of painters. His works are distinguishable in their finely observed genre details, which always have subtle ironic undertones. The artist achieves a unified impression in his compositions by means of the soft use of colour, as in the present painting. In 1660 the Stadholder of Friesland, Willem Frederick of Orange-Nassau, appointed him as court painter. During the years spent at the Leeuwarden court, he painted cheerful genre scenes almost exclusively for his employers, which are comparable with the works of Jan Miense Molenaer of the same period. Independent works by the artist are rare because, due to his early death, his oeuvre is small.
