Lot No. 249

Marie Louise Elisabeth Vigée le Brun

(Paris 1755 – 1842) workshop of Portrait of Madame Grand, oil on canvas, 92.5 x 72.5 cm, framed

Provenance: Palazzo Strozzi, Biennale Mostra Mercato Internazionale Antiquariato, Florence, 15 September – 7 October 1979; European private collection This composition is linked with a signed painting of Madame Grand, dated 1783, also known as the ‘The Music lesson’, which is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The sitter was Catherine Noele Verlee, Worlée (1762–1835), the future Princess Talleyrand-Périgord, although at the time the painting was made in 1783 she was still Madame Grand, a Parisian courtesan known throughout the city, who was living in the rue du Sentier, near to the home of the portrait painter, Vigée Le Brun. At the time of the revolution Madame Grand fled to England, returning to Paris to become the mistress of the minister, Talleyrand, living openly with him. Probably for the sake of form, Napoleon ordered Talleyrand either to marry her or to give her up. They were married in 1802, although their happiness was short-lived. The Princess increasingly put on weight and became very religious. They separated in 1815.
