Certificate: U. Ruggeri. A second and probably larger variant of this picture from the Stucky Collection, Venice, was published in 1955 (G. Damerini, Monti, Valle, Acque, Venezia 1955, Tav. 176; see also R. Pallucchini, La Pittura nel Veneto, Il Settecento, II, Milano 1996, fig. 534). Prof Ruggeri classifies this painting as an early work of Zais, when the painter was still clearly influenced by the landscapes and capriccios of Marco Ricci. We are grateful to Prof Ugo Ruggeri, who, based on a photograph, has confirmed this as an autograph work by Giuseppe Zais.
