Lot No. 225

Niccolo Codazzi

(Rome 1642–1693 Genoa) and Theodor Helmbreker, known as Teodoro Fiammingo (Haarlem 1633–1696 Rome) An architectural capriccio with shepherds resting, oil on canvas, 96.5 x 130.5 cm, framed

Certificate: Prof Giancarlo Sestieri, Rome. This painting is a characteristic work by Niccolo Codazzi from the middle phase of his career in Rome during the 1670s. The attractive, bucolic figures of shepherds were painted by the Bamboccianti artist from Haarlem, Theodor Helmbreker, who collaborated with Niccolo Codazzi on many works during this Roman phase. Helmbreker was one of the best-known members of the Dutch artists’ colony in Rome, whom Codazzi presumably considered to have greater skill in the design of generic rustic figural groups than his compatriots. He worked on several occasions with Bamboccianti painters such as Helmbreker and Jacob de Heusch. Sestieri dates this painting to the “fase centrale del suo curriculum”. After a youth spent in Naples and activity in his father, Viviano’s workshop Codazzi began to develop into an artistic personality in his own right in works from his Roman period, of which this painting is an important exemplar.
