Lot No. 201

Pieter Boel

(Antwerp 1626–1674 Paris) Hunting still-life, oil on canvas, 81 x 113 cm, framed

Exhibited: Trophée de Chasse, Musée des Beaux-Arts, Bordeaux, 1991. Literature: B. Boysson und O. Le Bihan, Trophées de Chasse, Musée des Beaux-Arts, Bordeaux, 1997, cat. no. 7, as an autograph work by Pieter Boel. After training, Pieter Boel travelled to Italy in 1650/51 and established himself as a painter. On his return from Paris, he specialised in hunting still-lifes. In acknowledgment of his great talent, Charles Le Brun 1668 employed him in his tapestry workshop, where the Fleming produced cartoons for wall hangings. In 1669 he was appointed peintre du roi, since Louis XIV took a liking to his hunting scenes. Like the present painting, the opulent still-lifes by the artist are reminiscent of the style of Dutch painters, such as Jan Fyt, in their Baroque sensuality and the high regard given to the hunt within courtly society.
