On the reverse two labels, one inscribed in old handwriting with biographical details about the artist. The genre painter from Haarlem, Richard Brakenburgh based his work on the repertoire of rustic motifs and types of Jan Steen. It was for this reason that many of his better pictures were later attributed to Steen. Brakenburgh almost exclusively painted tavern scenes with wedding parties and jolly revellers.
