Provenance: Paul Brandt auction, Amsterdam, November 1978, lot 9. Literature: N. R. A. Vroom, A modest message as intimated by the painters of the Monochrome Banketje, Schiedam 1980, vol. I, p. 175, vol. II, cat. no. 319, with illustration, p. 64 (as autograph work by Gerrit Willemsz. Heda). Gerrit Willemsz. Heda was the second son and pupil of the still-life painter, Willem Claesz. Heda. In the ‘Lexikon der Holländischen Stilllebenmaler des 17. Jahrhunderts’ the entry on Heda reads, “Bergström sees the cool, pure grey tones, which G. W. Heda primarily employs in the representations of pewter and silver cutlery as characteristic of the artist. [...] Moreover it can be noted that in Gerrit’s compositions the objects depicted, whether they are jugs, glasses, plates, salt cellars or pitchers, lay claim to the entire table top while in his father’s pictures the objects order and give form to the surface of the table, thereby making evident their spatial volume...”.
