(Hanover 1755 – 1822 Vienna) Ideal landscape with reclining pair of lovers by a lake, signed and dated lower right ‘A. C. Dies 1799’, oil on panel, 19 x 25 cm, original gilded Biedermeier frame
Albert C. Dies studied in Düsseldorf, Mannheim and Basle, and then went on to Rome, where he launched himself into landscape painting which he mastered to perfection. He studied nature in the Albanian Mountains, in Tivoli and Naples. He was on friendly terms with Goethe, one of whose landscape drawings he coloured in 1787. In 1796 he left Rome with a Roman woman, whom he married in Salzburg. After having painted several landscapes for the Archbishop there, he settled in Vienna where he was a teacher at the Academy and was active both in a literary vein and as a composer. His Roman training is reflected in the present painting. There is an intimation here of the clarity of Claude Lorrain. Provenance: Austrian private collection
