Wolfgang Heimbach


(Ovelgönne 1610/13 – 1678 Oldenburg) attributed to Portrait of a family in a palace with a view of the cloudy sky through a portico, oil on canvas, 52 x 67 cm, framed, (Wo)

Provenance: Thomas Jefferson Bryan (1802 – 1870) New York; gift to the New-York Historical Society, New York, 1987; Literature: Catalogue of the Gallery of the Art of the New York Historical Society, 1915, no. B-329 (attributed to Bartolomeus van der Helst). Heimbach was born in 1613, though many biographers have his birth date as 1600, in Ovelgönne near Pinneberg. He travelled to the Netherlands and Italy and lived for some years in Denmark, where he became a successful court painter. His paintings almost always depict dark rooms mysteriously lit by candle light. He also put great emphasis on rendering clothing and jewellery.
