Marinus van Reymerswaele

This composition was very popular in the 16th century and various versions of it are known. The Dutch painter, Marinus Claesz. van Reymerswaele was influenced by Quentin Massys and Albrecht Dürer and was receptive to Lutherean social and religious themes. Reymerswaele is documented for the first time in 1509 as active in Antwerp. His works are dated between 1521 and 1560. They are characterised by a restless draughtsmanship, powerful cool colour and at times by characterful physiognomies. His paintings mirror the climate of the Reformation. The best examples of his painting are to be found in the Museo del Prado, Madrid, the Academia San Fernando, Madrid, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, the Museum der Schönen Künste, Antwerp and the Museo del Bargello, Florence.
