Lot No. 148

Pier Francesco Garola

(Giaveno 1638–1716 Rome) An architectural capriccio with figural group, oil on canvas, 113 x 193 cm, framed

We are grateful to Prof Giancarlo Sestieri, Rome, for identifying the present painting as the work of Garola (e-mail dated 4 August 2009). At the start of his career, Pier Francesco Garola worked as court painter to the Savoy dynasty in Turin, where he produced many capricci in the Royal palaces of Turin and Stupinigi, before continuing his training in Venice. On arrival in Rome, he was admitted to the Academia di S. Luca as a master of prospettiva. In Rome he worked in the tradition of Viviano Codazzi together with Luigi Garzi and the Ghisolfis. In the present painting their influence is also evident. Garola’s work references that of Pannini in its monumentality and the inventive architectural compositions.
