Niccolo Codazzi
(Rome 1642–1693 Genoa) Two architectural capricci: View of an antique palace and View of an antique thermal complex, oil on canvas, each 148 x 116 cm, framed
We are grateful to Prof. Giancarlo Sestieri, Rome, for identifying these two pendants as autograph works by Niccolo Codazzi. Prof. Sestieri is going to publish the paintings in his work Il Capriccio architettonico in Italia nel Sei- e Settecento, which is forthcoming in 2010. The figures in the present painting were executed by Codazzi’s collaborator from Genoa, Paolo Gerolamo Piola (1666–1724), who also assisted Codazzi in the Palazzo Rossi.
